i think that the movie is great i love the way it show what the real word is like and or what it could be like for someone else i think that the movie has a very good piont in the way it show teenagers that life isn´t alway the best and that you should deal with it and things might get better

I got stuck when trying to cheat and steal someone else´s work off the internet. I needed to hand in a ´Looking for Alibrandi Film Review´ by the end of the lesson so feel free to cut-and-paste my ´little review´ below. I am making it un-copyrighted from Fhashstark Industries. Have fun - with lots of love from Daniel Fowler.

The feature film ‘Looking for Alibrandi’, directed by Kate Woods, follows a year in the life of a 17-year-old Italian-Australian girl trying to deal with her exams, the return of her father, the choice between two boys, the traditional values imposed by her family and a dark secret of her grandmother.

Pia Miranda plays Josie, an intelligent and articulate student in her final year at high school, dealing with all the usual issues that are common to her age. Things such as stressing over exams and trying to get the boy of her dreams to notice her, and the more serious issues of having to deal with the fact that her father, Michael, has returned after a long absence and racism, due to her Italian background. The film´s opening scene on ´wog´s day´, where Josie´s relatives are making tomato paste, is perhaps foreshadowing the entire theme of the film. The cultural cringe plays a strong part in the daily lives of emigrant families all over Australia and the Alibrandi household is no exception.

Josie is a dishonest child and, because of this, her pessimistic grandmother monitors her life with the help of a network of friends and family, and is not particularly impressed that the rough-and-tumble boy, Jacob turns up to date her granddaughter. Josie´s mother is Sicilian and a single mother. Josie is in her final year at school, (HSC) on a scholarship at an exclusive Catholic school, and struggling to come to terms with her Sicilian background in suburban Sydney. To add to her problems, the family is ‘cursed’, according to her grandmother, and Mr Alibrandi makes a sudden reappearance much to the family´s distress. But the problem that seems to be on Josies mind all of the time is that her heart is torn between John Barton and Jacob.

Through all these somewhat feminine issues, the viewers can immediately see that the film was made to appeal directly to young teenage girls. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed the story myself. I did think that it was a bit of a ‘chick-flick’, but the humour and well scripted dialogue of the cast made it easy to watch and understand. I even found that in some parts I was cheering in my head, like when Josie smacked the lead racist ‘Anglo snob’ in the face with the help of an extremely heavy book. This proved to me that, if you are enjoying and getting into the story, it is easy to get involved with the character on screen.

this movie is intriging. It covers many issues and problems that Josie has to daeal with, especially being and ethnic girl. I especially like the comment on ´national wog day´ i find that very funny.
