It tells the story of Lilia Chiong-Yang (Vilma Santos), a Chinese-born
woman who was brought up in the Philippines. She was given away by her
real mother to Melencio (Eddie Garcia) so that she would be safe from
the life she would have gotten in to if she grew up in China.
Apparently, having a lot of daughters in the family was cursed. So her
mother decided to give her away. She might have lived a better life if
she did.
At present, she was very active in the anti-crime crusade. She was once
part of the "Kilosan" along with Paul Yang (Jay Manalo) and Michael Lim
(Christopher De Leon) during the 70´s. Michael and Lilia had a special
relationship back then, but they were separated after their struggle to
get away from the authorities. She ended up marrying Paul instead.
Paul and Lilia had 3 children namely Stephen (Patrick Garcia), Judith
(Karylle) and Eliza (Angel Locsin). They all lived a very happy life,
until Lilia´s life took a turn for the worst.
One faithful day, she met with her former fiancè Michael, and they
reminisced about their past. He wanted her to come back, he wanted her
to choose... her family or her one and only love. Things got worst
then. A lot of rumors came up and even her own family condemned her
because of it.
good thing about this movie is she made a decision in the end.

Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Musical Score… all these awards bagged by Regal Film’s “Mano Po” in the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival are enough to draw the audience to its Great Wall-long audience beeline. But surprisingly, the film of the year proves that there’s more than all these. A lot more.
Synopsis
“Tayong mga Tsinoy ay bihag sa iba’t ibang paraan,” Ara Mina, narrated. This is where the story of this Chinese-Filipino family evolves.
The curtain rises with Luis Go (Eddie Garcia), who was sent to the Philippines during China’s civil war to aid his family financially, goes back to Fujian to introduce her Filipina bride, Elisa, (Boots Anson-Roa) to his family and relatives who instantly dislike her for being non-Chinese. But the young man chooses Elisa and they go back to the Philippines to start a new life. From copra business, through the painstaking years of hard work and determination, they are able to put up the Go Group of Companies.
The couple is blessed with two children: Lina (Amy Austria) and Daniel (Tirso Cruz III). The former is a very Pinay character: participated in rallies, was disinherited due to marrying a Pinoy, and thus a great influence to her youngest niece. Meanwhile, Daniel is married to Gina (Gina Alajar) who bore him three daughters: Vera (Maricel Soriano), a shrewd Tsinay who manages the family business and the howe of Jay Manalo; Juliet (Kris Aquino), an obedient daughter and a submissive housewife to Eric Quizon; and Richelle (Ara Mina), the black sheep of the family.
The story revolves around the youngest Go: she was a drug addict, fell into the hands of the policemen during a raid, was offered to work as an undercover agent, was orphaned by her beloved amah, testified against the drug lord PNP chief who happened to be a family “friend”, attached with a very much disliked cop named Raf (Richard Gomez), gave her family all the headache, was kidnapped with her elder sibling, was saved during the raid but was hurt, was forgiven by his family afterwards, and has closed the tie of the family that convinced their angkong to visit China despite the words that he wouldn’t go back there without his Elisa.
Checking the Hands
The Title. Why “Mano Po”? Younger characters always do this gesture of kissing the hands of the family matriarch and patriarch. This shows both the Chinese and Filipino way of showing reverence and deep respect to their elders. And on a deeper level, to me, seeing Ara Mina doing this seems depicting a way of saying sorry for not being a traditional and conventional Tsinay, for living a life that is far beyond those of her family and fellow Tsinoys; and the oldies´ acceptance of the act is like forgiving, accepting, and understanding her despite all her imperfections.
The Characters. Aside from Gina Alajar and Eric Quizon whose talents are wasted due to not-so-significant and not-so-established roles but of shaking presence in the roster, the cast as a whole is not just a star-studded lineup but is a perfect selection.
Here shows the true craft of an Ara Mina, the festival’s Best Actress awardee, this time far from the usual boobsie chick with dialogues such as “Oooohhhh” and “Aaaahhhh”. Her acting in this film is a resurrection of her career. She looks very Tsinay, acts like a modern Tsinay, and speaks like a Tsinay with her funny accent that is not even understood by her relatives shown at their China shoot.
See Kris Aquino behaving and obeying her parents! Her role may not be that challenging because it is easy to project as a soft-spoken one. But knowing her as a taklesa host, her acting deserves a closer look. She has been very consistent all throughout and thus making her worthy of what she got – the Best Supporting Actress award.
But then, on the not-so-good Fookien dialogues and to excuse the tone shifting, voice-overs and dubbings, Tsinoys say this, “The Filipino accent and intonation are very much different from those of the Chinese.” So even if these stars had their crash course on the Chinese language, it is understandable if they cannot perfect it. However, forgive me for not sparing angkong’s accent. He sounds like a Japanese! Probably because of his natural accent that is too strong to hide. But minus this, his acting is absolutely more than enough to win him the Best Actor plum.
The Elements. I cannot blame those who said that this film is nothing new. They are correct. But may I justify my answer, however, the story is very typical to Tsinoys simply because it is THEIR story. It is important to note that this film is not just a product of street facts, history books, and writer’s creativity. It actually parallels the story of a genuine Tsinay, the Regal matriarch herself, Lily Monteverde.
“A dream of Mother Lily, who wishes to pay tribute to her parents by telling the inspiring tale of a Filipino-Chinese family… Her strong-willed mother chose her husband when the parents and relatives of her father refused to recognize her mother. But Mother Lily’s dad chose his wife over his family…” writes Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Leah Salterio in her “Showbiz Tidbits” column.
Moving on, first thing you´ll notice (which is actually one of the negative feedbacks of the viewers) is that the characters wear Cheongsam and Cheong shan most of the time (plus the “misplaced” Chinese opera, among others). These designs, I believe, should not be questioned because they are a writer´s "what if". The family, despite the Filipina mother and the Chinese father who turned his back to his Chinese parents and are now living in the Philippines, ironically, are very much attached to the Chinese side of the family. That’s a given. Period.

Twice a year, the City of Manila sponsors a film festival featuring movies from the different production companies in the Philippines. Several movies are projected at the Metro Manila Film Festival to entertain moviegoers and at the same time, rake in the much-needed funds. One of the December 2002 film entries was Regal Film’s Mano Po.
Mano Po is a Filipino movie about the struggles of Filipino Chinese families to find their place in the Filipino community of the Philippines. With a cast of veterans, including multi-awarded Eddie Garcia, diamond star Maricel Soriano, Tirso Cruz III, Gina Alajar and Boots Anson-Roa, and directed by one of the Philippines’ best directors, Joel Lamangan, Mano Po is said to be the story of Regal Film executive producer and matriarch, Lily Y. Monteverde.
To mano is to place the back of your elder´s hand to your forehead as a sign of respect and humility. Mano Po tells us that in the Filipino Chinese community, the cultural and lingual barriers are more than enough to make respect unreachable. The stories of this ChineseFilipino family prove that blood is truly thicker than water and in good times and in bad,your family remains on your side.
A lot of people complained that Mano Po didn´t deserve the Best Picture awardbecause it’s too much similar to a soap opera. That´s not a coincidence as one of the movie´sscriptwriters is award-winning Roy Iglesias, who also writes for one of the country´s leadingTV dramas. Mano Po has also been labeled stereotypical and compared to The Joy Luck Club.There are a lot of details that needed to be worked out, like the overload of flashbacksthe movie did not need. There are also some inconsistencies with character building. Viewers never find out how Vera Go, one of the daughters who inherit the family´s business empire, became stonehearted.
But this movie deserved the award because along with exceptional performances by the actors and its commendable technical features, it is the first Filipino movie to ever tackle the Filipino Chinesecommunity in the Philippines.

It tells the story of Lilia Chiong-Yang (Vilma Santos), a Chinese-born
woman who was brought up in the Philippines. She was given away by her
real mother to Melencio (Eddie Garcia) so that she would be safe from
the life she would have gotten in to if she grew up in China.
Apparently, having a lot of daughters in the family was cursed. So her
mother decided to give her away. She might have lived a better life if
she did.
At present, she was very active in the anti-crime crusade. She was once
part of the "Kilosan" along with Paul Yang (Jay Manalo) and Michael Lim
(Christopher De Leon) during the 70´s. Michael and Lilia had a special
relationship back then, but they were separated after their struggle to
get away from the authorities. She ended up marrying Paul instead.
Paul and Lilia had 3 children namely Stephen (Patrick Garcia), Judith
(Karylle) and Eliza (Angel Locsin). They all lived a very happy life,
until Lilia´s life took a turn for the worst.
One faithful day, she met with her former fiancè Michael, and they
reminisced about their past. He wanted her to come back, he wanted her
to choose... her family or her one and only love. Things got worst
then. A lot of rumors came up and even her own family condemned her
because of it.
good thing about this movie is she made a decision in the end.

Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Musical Score… all these awards bagged by Regal Film’s “Mano Po” in the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival are enough to draw the audience to its Great Wall-long audience beeline. But surprisingly, the film of the year proves that there’s more than all these. A lot more.
Synopsis
“Tayong mga Tsinoy ay bihag sa iba’t ibang paraan,” Ara Mina, narrated. This is where the story of this Chinese-Filipino family evolves.
The curtain rises with Luis Go (Eddie Garcia), who was sent to the Philippines during China’s civil war to aid his family financially, goes back to Fujian to introduce her Filipina bride, Elisa, (Boots Anson-Roa) to his family and relatives who instantly dislike her for being non-Chinese. But the young man chooses Elisa and they go back to the Philippines to start a new life. From copra business, through the painstaking years of hard work and determination, they are able to put up the Go Group of Companies.
The couple is blessed with two children: Lina (Amy Austria) and Daniel (Tirso Cruz III). The former is a very Pinay character: participated in rallies, was disinherited due to marrying a Pinoy, and thus a great influence to her youngest niece. Meanwhile, Daniel is married to Gina (Gina Alajar) who bore him three daughters: Vera (Maricel Soriano), a shrewd Tsinay who manages the family business and the howe of Jay Manalo; Juliet (Kris Aquino), an obedient daughter and a submissive housewife to Eric Quizon; and Richelle (Ara Mina), the black sheep of the family.
The story revolves around the youngest Go: she was a drug addict, fell into the hands of the policemen during a raid, was offered to work as an undercover agent, was orphaned by her beloved amah, testified against the drug lord PNP chief who happened to be a family “friend”, attached with a very much disliked cop named Raf (Richard Gomez), gave her family all the headache, was kidnapped with her elder sibling, was saved during the raid but was hurt, was forgiven by his family afterwards, and has closed the tie of the family that convinced their angkong to visit China despite the words that he wouldn’t go back there without his Elisa.
Checking the Hands
The Title. Why “Mano Po”? Younger characters always do this gesture of kissing the hands of the family matriarch and patriarch. This shows both the Chinese and Filipino way of showing reverence and deep respect to their elders. And on a deeper level, to me, seeing Ara Mina doing this seems depicting a way of saying sorry for not being a traditional and conventional Tsinay, for living a life that is far beyond those of her family and fellow Tsinoys; and the oldies´ acceptance of the act is like forgiving, accepting, and understanding her despite all her imperfections.
The Characters. Aside from Gina Alajar and Eric Quizon whose talents are wasted due to not-so-significant and not-so-established roles but of shaking presence in the roster, the cast as a whole is not just a star-studded lineup but is a perfect selection.
Here shows the true craft of an Ara Mina, the festival’s Best Actress awardee, this time far from the usual boobsie chick with dialogues such as “Oooohhhh” and “Aaaahhhh”. Her acting in this film is a resurrection of her career. She looks very Tsinay, acts like a modern Tsinay, and speaks like a Tsinay with her funny accent that is not even understood by her relatives shown at their China shoot.
See Kris Aquino behaving and obeying her parents! Her role may not be that challenging because it is easy to project as a soft-spoken one. But knowing her as a taklesa host, her acting deserves a closer look. She has been very consistent all throughout and thus making her worthy of what she got – the Best Supporting Actress award.
But then, on the not-so-good Fookien dialogues and to excuse the tone shifting, voice-overs and dubbings, Tsinoys say this, “The Filipino accent and intonation are very much different from those of the Chinese.” So even if these stars had their crash course on the Chinese language, it is understandable if they cannot perfect it. However, forgive me for not sparing angkong’s accent. He sounds like a Japanese! Probably because of his natural accent that is too strong to hide. But minus this, his acting is absolutely more than enough to win him the Best Actor plum.
The Elements. I cannot blame those who said that this film is nothing new. They are correct. But may I justify my answer, however, the story is very typical to Tsinoys simply because it is THEIR story. It is important to note that this film is not just a product of street facts, history books, and writer’s creativity. It actually parallels the story of a genuine Tsinay, the Regal matriarch herself, Lily Monteverde.
“A dream of Mother Lily, who wishes to pay tribute to her parents by telling the inspiring tale of a Filipino-Chinese family… Her strong-willed mother chose her husband when the parents and relatives of her father refused to recognize her mother. But Mother Lily’s dad chose his wife over his family…” writes Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Leah Salterio in her “Showbiz Tidbits” column.
Moving on, first thing you´ll notice (which is actually one of the negative feedbacks of the viewers) is that the characters wear Cheongsam and Cheong shan most of the time (plus the “misplaced” Chinese opera, among others). These designs, I believe, should not be questioned because they are a writer´s "what if". The family, despite the Filipina mother and the Chinese father who turned his back to his Chinese parents and are now living in the Philippines, ironically, are very much attached to the Chinese side of the family. That’s a given. Period.

Twice a year, the City of Manila sponsors a film festival featuring movies from the different production companies in the Philippines. Several movies are projected at the Metro Manila Film Festival to entertain moviegoers and at the same time, rake in the much-needed funds. One of the December 2002 film entries was Regal Film’s Mano Po.
Mano Po is a Filipino movie about the struggles of Filipino Chinese families to find their place in the Filipino community of the Philippines. With a cast of veterans, including multi-awarded Eddie Garcia, diamond star Maricel Soriano, Tirso Cruz III, Gina Alajar and Boots Anson-Roa, and directed by one of the Philippines’ best directors, Joel Lamangan, Mano Po is said to be the story of Regal Film executive producer and matriarch, Lily Y. Monteverde.
To mano is to place the back of your elder´s hand to your forehead as a sign of respect and humility. Mano Po tells us that in the Filipino Chinese community, the cultural and lingual barriers are more than enough to make respect unreachable. The stories of this ChineseFilipino family prove that blood is truly thicker than water and in good times and in bad,your family remains on your side.
A lot of people complained that Mano Po didn´t deserve the Best Picture awardbecause it’s too much similar to a soap opera. That´s not a coincidence as one of the movie´sscriptwriters is award-winning Roy Iglesias, who also writes for one of the country´s leadingTV dramas. Mano Po has also been labeled stereotypical and compared to The Joy Luck Club.There are a lot of details that needed to be worked out, like the overload of flashbacksthe movie did not need. There are also some inconsistencies with character building. Viewers never find out how Vera Go, one of the daughters who inherit the family´s business empire, became stonehearted.
But this movie deserved the award because along with exceptional performances by the actors and its commendable technical features, it is the first Filipino movie to ever tackle the Filipino Chinesecommunity in the Philippines.

kanonod ko lang sa movie , frankly speaking the first 15 min. is nakakalito but as u watch it, maiintindihan mo na .. kakainis nga lang c angel locsin akala ko kung sino yung pala isang beses lang siya mag papakita sa eksena ! akala mo kung sino .. hehehe.. pero maganda ang casting ha tsaka ganda istory.. till here!
